FIESTA DURING PANDEMYA

Similar to many other awaited yearly events, a lot of these aren’t possible due to the pandemic and the dangers of getting infected by the virus. The pandemic has become such a huge bother, hasn’t it?

Every year on January 25th, the Vigan City Fiesta is celebrated. It is commemorated on the feast day of St. Paul the Apostle's conversion; the patron saint of Vigan City is St. Paul. The Vigan City Fiesta is normally held over a period of many days. It involves the celebration of Vigan's cityhood anniversary, which takes place on the 27th of January each year. Since it is the custom of Filipinos to return to their hometown to celebrate events like this, family members, friends, and even foreigners, come to Vigan to enjoy the event. Thousands of visitors from other regions of the Philippines and other nations join them in enjoying the local government's cultural shows, parades, and street dance, all of which are supported by local businesses and communities. It was all fun.

This year’s celebration of Vigan City fiesta wasn’t much different from how other events were celebrated. As expected, it wasn’t the same. There weren’t any people dancing amazingly for the street dancing, or any parade out in the streets of the city in general, along with little to zero gatherings to celebrate or enjoy the fiesta. Contests such as street dancing, were to be done online. However, a mass was held on the morning of January 25. It was even broadcasted live on Facebook so the ones that didn’t get to attend in the church would still be able to participate and stay safe in their respective homes.

All in all, I hope the pandemic will end soon so we can celebrate events such as this like the way we used to. To have fun and enjoy them together with loved ones without the risks of getting infected by any virus. But in the meantime, we make do with the current situation we are in and continue to celebrate as much as we can.
