TRADITIONL AND CULTURAL: KANNAWIDAN FESTIVAL

In northern part of Luzon in Region I, the province of Ilocos Sur can be located. Ilocos Sur is a beautiful place well known for its historical architecture. In almost every location, festivals are celebrated. The festival celebrated in Ilocos Sur is the one of the most wonderful, popular, and awaited festivals, the “Kannawidan Ylocos Festival” or just “Kannawidan Festival”! The Iloco Foundation of Arts and Culture!

According to the information gathered from the internet, the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival lasts from last weeks of January to the first week fo February. It commemorates the dividing and foundation of the two Ilocos provinces, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte, in the year 1818. It highlights the cultural traditions of the province. The cooking demos of Ilocano dishes are shown, along with a lot of joyful indigenous dances and performances, and showcasing of beautifully made artworks, these are performed and made for contests.

Before the pandemic, on the start of the celebration, during the opening day, a mass is held at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral. Follows this is a procession that goes around the city of the Patron Saints of the 40 parishes and images of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary around the city. This is done to show the deeply rooted religious culture and it is done as a manner of praising the Lord for all of his favors, as well as the city's rich heritage, which includes the Ilokanos' beloved families and friends.

“Kannawidan”, a variant of the Ilokano word “tawid”, its definition varies in different sources but are connected in a way that its meaning has something to do with culture and/or culture. Kannawidan Festival is an annual very awaited time of the year in Ilocos Sur. It was mentioned earlier that the festival serves as a showcase for the province's culture, heritage, and products. The new generation of children is one of the key focuses on why things are done. This festival focuses on Ilokano children in order for them to appreciate the province's traditions and cultures, as it has been seen that they do not acknowledge these traditions and cultures enough. In that case, I hope the roots and culture of Ilocos won’t be forgotten by future generations and that they realize how important they are to their identity.

To conclude, the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival is a meaningful and awaited Ilocos Sur event for Ilokanos that showcases and promotes its unique dishes and products, traditions, cultures, art, and the wonderful talent of the Ilokanos. It is a joyful event that brings the citizens of Ilocos Sur together and helps in developing this beloc=ved province.
